01/12/2009 - Between great masters and neglected artists: Italian art of past forty years at Palazzo Grassi
From 27 September 2008 to 22 March 2009 Palazzo Grassi, in cooperation with the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago, will organise the exhibition 'Italics – Italian Art between tradition and revolution 1968 – 2008', led by curator Francesco Bonami.
Italics exhibits Italian contemporary art as though it was a train whose cars travelled to different destinations, some crossing oceans and borders, some other ending up lost in the tortuous meanders of recent history.
While presenting the key works of contemporary Italian figurative art, from Burri to Fontana, from Arte Povera to Transavanguardia, the exhibition explores in depth the real essence of Italy’s artistic production over the past forty years.
Through 250 works by 107 artists - some of whom world-famous, such as Pino Pascali, Alighiero Boetti, Marisa Merz, Maurizio Cattelan, Vanessa Beecroft, whilst other at times unfairly neglected like Fernando Melani or Maria Lai – the new Palazzo Grassi exhibition offers both Italian and international visitors an unprecedented insight into Italian art between tradition and revolution, two defining forces that have shaped contemporary art.
